History stop

Fort Moultrie is the island’s essential historic site.

The first fortification here helped defend Charleston from a British naval attack on June 28, 1776. The National Park Service interprets the site’s later coastal-defense history as well, including the brick fort that remains today.

The current NPS schedule lists Fort Moultrie’s grounds, parking area and restrooms as open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The visitor center is at 1214 Middle Street. Check the NPS page before your visit because hours, fees and programs can change.

Beach + nature

Walk the island where maritime forest meets the Atlantic.

The Town describes the Sullivan’s Island Nature Trail as two miles of paths linking the Station 16 beach area with Fort Moultrie and Charleston Light. It is one of the easiest ways to experience the island’s maritime habitat without leaving the developed part of town far behind.

Beach access is available from numerous public paths. Accessible beach routes are available at Station 26, Station 21 and Station 18½, and part of the Nature Trail includes ADA matting between Stations 18 and 18½.

A quieter historic stop

Battery Gadsden is now a library—and a link to Edgar Allan Poe.

The Edgar Allan Poe/Sullivan’s Island Library occupies renovated Battery Gadsden, a former Spanish-American War-era gun battery. Poe was stationed on Sullivan’s Island in 1827–1828 and later used the island as the setting for The Gold-Bug.

It is a good stop when you want something more local and less obvious than the beach-and-fort circuit. Check Charleston County Public Library for current branch hours before going.

The western side of the island opens toward Charleston Harbor, giving a very different feel from the Atlantic beach and a useful geographic sense of why the island mattered militarily.

Island Overview

Before you go

A few Sullivan’s Island rules matter more than they do at a typical beach stop.

The Town allows public beach parking in the public right-of-way, but all four tires must be off the pavement and beach paths cannot be blocked. There are no lifeguards on duty. Alcohol is prohibited on streets, boardwalks and beaches, and glass, polystyrene and plastic containers are not allowed on the beach.

If you plan to bring a dog, review the Town’s current dog-license and beach-hour rules before you arrive. Rules and seasonal access details can change, so the official Town beach page is the right final check.
