Where to go outside

Four outdoor places that define the island

The best outdoor stops are not interchangeable. The beach is broad and recreational, the Nature Trail is about maritime habitat, Thomson Park is an inlet viewpoint, and Poe Avenue Park is the neighborhood recreation option.

01

Sullivan’s Island Beach

The Town maintains public access to 3.5 miles of Atlantic beachfront, with the harbor to the west and Breach Inlet to the east.

02

Sullivan’s Island Nature Trail

Two miles of pedestrian paths link the Station 16 beach area with Fort Moultrie and the Charleston Light through protected maritime landscape.

03

Thomson Park at Breach Inlet

A beach-and-inlet park used for sunbathing, surf fishing and wildlife viewing. Swimming is prohibited because of strong currents and undertow.

04

Poe Avenue Park

A neighborhood park at Station 17 and Poe Avenue with two tennis courts, a bottle-filling station and a contemporary playground.

Thomson Park · Breach Inlet

A great shoreline viewpoint—and a place not to swim.

Thomson Park sits at Breach Inlet between Sullivan’s Island and Isle of Palms. The Town identifies it as a popular place for surf fishing, sunbathing and dolphin or porpoise sightings.

The important safety distinction is explicit: swimming is not allowed at Thomson Park because Breach Inlet has extremely strong currents and undertow.

Beach rules that change the day

The beach is public, but it is not rule-free.

Sullivan’s Island’s beach regulations are designed around safety, wildlife and keeping public access open. The current Town rules are worth checking before bringing dogs, tents, coolers or recreational equipment.

No lifeguards

Ocean entry is at your own risk; the Town states that no lifeguards are on duty.

Containers & alcohol

Glass, polystyrene and prohibited plastic items are not allowed, and alcohol is prohibited on streets, boardwalks and beaches.

Parking

Use public right-of-way parking, keep all four tires off the pavement and never block streets or beach-access paths.

Dunes & wildlife

Stay out of dunes and turtle-nesting areas; loose dogs and other activity are not allowed there.

Tents

Properly anchored tents and umbrellas are allowed, with tents limited to 10 feet by 10 feet or smaller.

Smoking

Smoking is prohibited on the beach, beach-access paths and public spaces on Sullivan’s Island.

Accessibility + planning

A few details make outdoor access much easier.

Parks + protected spaces

Not every outdoor space is just beachfront.

Poe Avenue Park provides the island’s most traditional neighborhood recreation setting, while the Town and Lowcountry Land Trust have also protected spaces such as the Old Dump at Station 19, Marshall Boulevard Beachfront and the Old Pitt Street Bridge Landing at Station 9.

Those protected areas help preserve maritime habitat and open space around a town where the residential core sits immediately beside beach, dune, forest, harbor and marsh environments.
