Sullivan’s Island tree protection
Many trees on the island are protected before a saw ever comes out.
The Town’s Tree Maintenance & Removal Guide says any tree with a diameter of 6 inches or greater is protected. Trees 16 inches or greater are considered significant and require Tree Commission approval for removal.
Hazard-tree removal requires documentation from a certified arborist establishing the tree as diseased, dying, mortally damaged or otherwise a hazard. Protected trees near construction also require Tree Protection Zones or an arborist-developed protection plan.
Request tree service
Tell us what is happening with the tree.
Include the property address, the type of tree work, whether the tree is damaged or declining, what structures are nearby and how urgent the situation is. The request is stored in Fluent Forms and sent to the site administrator for routing.
After wind or storm damage
A damaged tree can change from landscaping problem to safety problem quickly.
Broken leaders, hanging limbs, uprooted root plates and split trunks can create immediate hazards after severe weather. Keep people away from the affected area, especially when limbs are suspended over roofs, driveways, streets or utility lines.
Before removing a tree
Size, condition and species can change the approval process.
The Town distinguishes protected trees from significant trees and gives Sabal palmettos special protection. Healthy protected-tree removals can require mitigation or replacement, while documented hazard trees follow a different process. Confirm the category before scheduling removal.

Common tree-service questions
What Sullivan’s Island property owners ask before tree work
Do I need a permit to remove a tree on Sullivan’s Island?
The Town says trees 6 inches DBH or greater are protected. Removal requires the appropriate Town process, and trees 16 inches DBH or greater are considered significant and require Tree Commission approval.
What is DBH?
DBH means diameter at breast height. Sullivan’s Island measures tree diameter at 4½ feet above grade to determine the level of protection.
Are Sabal palmettos protected?
Yes. The Town’s tree rules give Sabal palmettos special protected status regardless of size, with specific relocation or replacement requirements.
What counts as a hazard tree?
The Town describes hazard trees as diseased, dying, mortally damaged or otherwise hazardous. A removal request for a hazard tree requires a written recommendation from a certified arborist establishing the hazard.
Can a healthy protected tree be removed?
Potentially, but healthy protected-tree removals require Town approval and can require mitigation or replacement. Significant trees have an additional Tree Commission review process.
What should I tell a tree-service company when requesting help?
Describe the tree’s location, visible damage or decline, approximate trunk size, nearby structures or utilities, whether the issue followed a storm, and how urgent the situation is.
